Shaw’s Commitment to the Fight Against Climate Change

Karyn Lumsden

Strategy and Projects Director at Shaw

We may be small, but we want to be leaders in the fight against climate change.

Shaw have joined the SME Climate Hub pledge and have adopted the ambitious goals that go with it.  We have now committed to be part of the United Nation’s Race to Zero campaign.

We have pledged to act by completing the commitment to halve emissions by 2030, achieve net zero by 2050, and report on our progress yearly.

Increasingly, sustainability is becoming a key issue for businesses and society in general, as people realise that current industrial, economic and social systems are storing up problems for the future. Sustainability is not about moving backwards but about looking forwards to new, better ways of doing things.

There are two main courses of action we will undertake to achieve our ambitious pledge:

1.     Environmental – reducing environmental damage to levels that can naturally be absorbed by nature.

2.     Social – developing a healthy and fair global and local society.

1. Environmental

Shaw intends to minimise its carbon footprint by operating a hybrid business structure, centred around our workspace in Leith, Edinburgh. This allows our team to work at convenient locations and avoid excess travel and we offer electric vehicles to our staff through a salary sacrifice scheme.

Wherever possible, our stationery is recycled or recyclable, hence minimising its impact on the Earth. We use paper only from sustainable sources where available and also encourage our clients to do the same. More importantly, we try to avoid using physical stationery and printing documents unless necessary.

We reduce by only buying products that we need, re-use by using second-hand products where available and selling or donating unwanted items and try to recycle as much of our waste as possible.

2. Social

We value our team. We make sure that our team members enjoy their work by giving them every possible opportunity to express themselves and fulfil their potential. We also value our clients and pride ourselves on maintaining great relationships, accommodating their needs wherever possible.

We use local suppliers where possible to reduce our carbon footprint and stimulate the local economy, and only deal with ethical organisations who treat their staff well.

We actively promote the benefits of socially responsible business and comply with all equal opportunities’ laws and regulations.

We also donate money to charity through our B1G1 scheme. The projects chosen for this are often environmentally friendly in nature and always have a purpose of helping to achieve a healthy and fair global and local society.
