Case Studies

Shetland Select – Branding and Website

We were commissioned to develop a new brand identity and marketing material for Shetland Select mussels, grown by the Thomason family in Yell, Shetland to coincide with the start of the new harvesting season.

As part of the project, we designed and built a new website, which features a video by Greg McCarron and photography by Calum Togood and gives a real insight into the environment in which the mussels are reared and the reasons why these particular molluscs are so special.

Shetland Soap

COPE Ltd is an award-winning social enterprise providing work placements for adults with disabilities. As part of a wider rebranding exercise across all COPE Ltd’s businesses, we rebranded and repackaged Shetland Soap Company’s complete range of products.

The range is inspired by and draws on the natural environment, using natural ingredients and fragrances in its body wash, soaps and creams. A clean and simple wave design was chosen to reflect these attributes and also to allow the company to tailor and print its packaging in house.

Heart of Midlothian FC Museum

The museum at Tynecastle tracks the history of Heart of Midlothian since it formed in 1874.

We devised a strategy for how the extensive history could be broken down and recounted through the narrative. We created the design proposals for the museum, including the branding, then researched the history and wrote all the narrative. We designed every panel and other presentational routes for the narrative and the artefacts, as well as all the signage associated with the museum.

Finally, we managed the production and installation of the exhibits and scripted and produced a ten-minute video of the club’s history.

Aurora Jewellery – E-Commerce Website, Social Media and PR

For Orkney jewellery company Aurora, we migrated the company's e-commerce website to a new and more robust platform, redesigning and restructuring in the process.

Large visuals and bold calls to action lead on the interface, allowing Aurora's stunning jewellery to speak for itself. The site launched alongside a BBC documentary, ‘When the Boat Comes In’, which focused on cruise liners making port in Orkney. Complementing our website work, other marketing work for Aurora has included social media and PR.

So Much to Sea – Marketing an Industry

The seafood industry is the cornerstone of the Shetland economy. To ensure that the communities that it supports recognise its significance, the industry associations commissioned us to deliver a major awareness campaign.

Our approach was a fully integrated solution which embraced strategy, research, naming and branding the project, copywriting, and design across a wide range of media, including literature, education packs, travelling exhibition, merchandise and a dedicated website. We also managed the social media, organised community events, worked with a film-maker to produce a film, and ran the PR activity.

Musselburgh Racecourse - Branding

We carried out a major rebranding project and associated design work for Musselburgh Racecourse, one of the UK’s most stylish racecourses.

The core identity references horseracing’s ‘Sport of Kings’ descriptor by subtly incorporating two horses’ heads within a crown for the logo device, complemented by elegant typography and black and gold brand colours.

In addition to the main signage around the course, the project also involved creating a family of sub-brands to create identities for the various bars, restaurants, cafe and other attractions. This was rolled out through a complementary colour palette and implemented through signage and interior design.

Heart of Midlothian Malt Whiskies

We designed the packaging and support materials for two whisky projects for Heart of Midlothian.

For the single malt, Always Hearts, a matchday concept is employed, with a background of match programmes and a main label which takes its format from a match ticket. A highlight of the bottle presentation is the club crest applied to the reverse of the bottle.

We also designed the limited edition malt, Glorious Hearts, which celebrates the 271 goals of the club’s leading goalscorer, John Robertson. The design features a specially created graphic device and every bottle has a booklet describing one of the goals scored.

Highland Fine Cheeses – Branding and Brand Development

For many years, we have worked closely with Tain-based Highland Fine Cheeses to create, promote and support individual brands from their range. We have worked - through identity design, brand development, packaging and marketing - on all brands, including Strathdon Blue, Nevis Blue, Blue Murder, Caboc, Highland Brie, Morangie Brie and the full range of Crowdies.

The update to packaging design has been hugely successful, resulting, for example, in a 400% increase in sales of the Black Crowdie, Morangie Brie and Highland Brie.

Northern Lighthouse Board – The Stevenson Rooms

We worked with the Northern Lighthouse Board (NLB) to create - at their Edinburgh headquarters - a conference/meeting centre, a heritage area, and an exhibition telling the story of the Stevenson family and the development of lighthouses in Scotland. A key feature of the project is a timeline in the area which charts the industry’s fascinating history. Our input included design, research and copywriting, and management of the production and installation. The end result is a superb centre called the Stevenson Rooms which is available to businesses and other organisations.
